An essential oil is not a diluted thing that has been made stronger. It is already the concentrate. It can take a great deal of plant material to fill one small bottle, and what comes out the other end is a material far more concentrated than anything the plant ever presents to your skin on its own. Diluting is not watering it down or wasting it. It is the step that turns a concentrate into something you can actually wear.
Why neat is rarely the answer
Two reasons, and neither is fussiness.
The first is your skin. Undiluted oils sit on a very small patch of skin at full strength, and skin does not always object the first time. Sensitisation is the risk worth knowing about: it can build quietly over repeated exposure, and once it has developed it tends to stay, often to an oil you were perfectly happy with for months. Diluting is what keeps that door shut.
The second is the scent. A drop of neat oil is a shout. In a carrier it opens out, softens, and lasts far longer on the skin, because the carrier slows how quickly the aromatic compounds lift away. Most oils are simply more beautiful at 2 percent than they are neat, which surprises people the first time they try it side by side.
The two oils people are told they can use neat
Lavender and tea tree. The advice is everywhere, it is decades old, and it traces back to a single much-repeated story about a chemist plunging a burnt hand into lavender. Treat it with more suspicion than its popularity suggests.
Neither oil is unusually dangerous, but neither is exempt from the mechanism described above, and tea tree has a particular problem: it oxidises readily, and oxidised tea tree is a considerably more likely sensitiser than fresh. An old bottle used neat and often is close to the worst case. If there is a single reason to keep tea tree capped, cool and dark, this is it.
Occasional neat use of a small amount on a small area, by an adult who knows their skin, is not the end of the world and I am not going to pretend otherwise. Routine neat use is a different thing, and it is the pattern that produces the problem. Diluting costs you nothing.
Picking a carrier
A carrier oil is a plain, near-odourless plant oil that dilutes the essential oil and carries it onto the skin. I do not stock carriers, so this is a straight recommendation rather than a nudge:
- Jojoba is technically a liquid wax rather than an oil, which is why it is the most stable of the common choices and the slowest to go rancid. If you want one bottle that will not let you down, this is it.
- Fractionated coconut is light, colourless, stays liquid, and has almost no scent of its own. Very forgiving, very long-lived.
- Sweet almond and apricot kernel are the classic softer options. Both are lovely on skin and both have a shorter shelf life, so buy sizes you will finish.
Whichever you choose, it wants the same treatment as the essential oils themselves: cool, dark, capped. A rancid carrier will spoil a good oil, and you will smell it before you see it.
What not to reach for: olive oil and other kitchen oils, which are strongly scented and will fight whatever you put in them. Mineral oil, which sits on the skin rather than sinking in. And water, which deserves its own paragraph further down, because it is the mistake with actual consequences.
One thing worth knowing before you make a large bottle of anything. Once an essential oil is diluted, the shelf life of the blend is governed by the carrier, not by the oils. Sweet almond or apricot kernel will typically give you six months to a year before it starts to smell faintly of old nuts. Jojoba and fractionated coconut will go for years. That is the practical argument for mixing small amounts often rather than one big batch, and everything in the storage guide applies to the finished blend just as it does to the neat oils.
The ratios
Dilution is quoted as a percentage of the total blend. For everyday purposes, three numbers cover almost everything:
- 0.5 to 1 percent for the face, for sensitive skin, and for anything you plan to use daily over a long stretch.
- 1 to 2 percent for general use on the body. This is the sensible default and where most blends belong.
- 3 percent is about as high as it is worth going for anything applied over a general area, and even then only for a short period, on an adult with no history of reacting.
Working in drops is easier than working in millilitres. Twenty drops is roughly one millilitre, close enough for this purpose, though thicker oils do drop larger. That gives you a table you can do in your head:
- 10ml carrier: 1 percent is 2 drops, 2 percent is 4 drops, 3 percent is 6 drops.
- 30ml carrier: 1 percent is 6 drops, 2 percent is 12 drops, 3 percent is 18 drops.
Those are the totals for the whole blend, not per oil. If you are combining three oils in 30ml at 2 percent, that is twelve drops shared between them, not twelve each.
For any other bottle size, the arithmetic is one line: millilitres multiplied by the percentage, multiplied by twenty, divided by one hundred. A 10ml roller at 2 percent is four drops. A 50ml bottle at 1 percent is ten. It is worth doing once for whatever size you use most and then never thinking about again.
Two habits are worth more than the precision here. Add the essential oils to the bottle first and the carrier second, so you can see what you have put in. And if a blend is one you might want to reproduce, weigh it rather than counting drops, because drop size drifts with viscosity, temperature and the orifice reducer in the neck of the bottle.
Perfume is a different calculation
Everything above is aromatherapy-style dilution: a blend spread over a large area of skin, often daily, usually in a vegetable oil. Fine fragrance is a different problem with different numbers, and it is worth understanding why, because otherwise the figures look contradictory.
A perfume is generally built in perfumer's alcohol rather than a carrier oil, and the aromatic concentration is far higher than 2 percent. As a rough guide to the conventional bands: an eau de cologne sits somewhere around 2 to 5 percent, an eau de toilette around 5 to 15, an eau de parfum around 15 to 20, and an extrait higher again. Those numbers are not reckless. They are possible because a perfume goes onto a few small points rather than a whole forearm, because alcohol flashes off and leaves comparatively little behind, and because a properly built formula is checked material by material against the limits that apply to each one, rather than against a single blanket percentage.
That last part is the real difference. A blanket 2 percent is a sensible rule precisely because it is blunt enough to be safe without knowing anything about what is in the bottle. Fine fragrance concentrations only work when someone has done the per-material assessment, which is a formulator's job and not a thing to reverse-engineer at the kitchen table. So: use the percentages above for anything you are making yourself in a carrier oil, and do not read the concentration on a finished perfume as permission to scale your own blends up to match it.
Always patch test
Before a new blend goes anywhere interesting, put a small amount of it on the inside of your forearm, leave it alone, and give it a day. If nothing has happened after twenty four hours, you are almost certainly fine. If there is redness, itching or heat, wash it off with plain soap and water and do not use that blend again. It is a dull step and it takes one minute, and it is the difference between finding out on your arm and finding out on your neck.
Citrus and sunlight
This is the one that catches people out. Some cold-pressed citrus oils carry furocoumarins, compounds that react with ultraviolet light. On skin that then goes into the sun, the result can be a burn or a lasting patch of darker pigment, at doses that would be completely unremarkable anywhere else. The commonly cited leave-on limit for cold-pressed bergamot is around 0.4 percent, which is far lower than the everyday 2 percent.
It is not all of them, and the difference matters. The ones to watch on skin are cold-pressed bergamot, lemon, lime and grapefruit. Sweet orange and mandarin are generally not considered phototoxic, which is part of why sweet orange is such an easy oil to start with.
The simple rule: if a blend contains one of those and it is going on skin that will see daylight, keep it low and stay out of direct sun for at least twelve hours afterwards. Distilled citrus oils do not carry the issue at all, because the furocoumarins are too heavy to come across in distillation. That is one practical reason the lime I stock is a distilled one rather than expressed.
Water is not a carrier
This one causes more trouble than the percentages do. Essential oils do not dissolve in water. Dropped into a bath they sit on the surface in undiluted beads, and the first thing they meet is skin, at full strength, on an area that has been warmed and opened by hot water. It is one of the more reliable ways to irritate yourself while believing you have been careful.
If you want oils in a bath, dilute them first in something that will hold them: a tablespoon of carrier oil, full-fat milk or cream, or a proper solubiliser. Be aware that carrier oil makes a tub genuinely slippery, so hold the handrail and think about who is getting in after you.
The same applies to room and linen sprays. Oil and water will separate no matter how enthusiastically you shake the bottle, so either use a solubiliser or accept that you must shake it hard immediately before every use, and keep it off skin and off anything that stains.
A short safety note
Essential oils are for external use only. Keep them away from the eyes and other mucous membranes, and out of reach of children. Dilution guidance of the kind above is written for healthy adults using oils on ordinary skin. Children, pregnancy, breastfeeding, existing skin conditions, and anything involving prescribed medication all sit outside it, and the right move there is to ask a qualified aromatherapist or your doctor rather than scale the numbers down and hope. Nothing here is medical advice, and none of it is a claim that any oil treats or prevents anything.
